But in the conditions of injury, open wounds, hospitals, and war, it is one of the most dangerous enemies.<\/p>\n\n<p>It is also called:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;<strong>Iraqi Horror<\/strong>&#8221; &#8211; because it massively affected American soldiers during the war in Iraq;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201c<strong>the invisible enemy of hospitals<\/strong>\u201d \u2014 because it spreads in intensive care units, surgeries, and on equipment;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201c<strong>a bacterium without fear<\/strong>\u201d \u2014 because it is resistant to most antibiotics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26a0\ufe0f What is dangerous?<\/h2>\n\n<p><strong>Acinetobacter baumannii<\/strong> causes:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>wound and burn infections;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>pneumonia;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sepsis (blood infection);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>meningitis;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>urinary tract infections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\ud83d\udc89 Military personnel injured in the battlefield are at extremely high risk of contracting A. baumannii. According to some studies, up to 36% of patients receive antibiotics before the pathogen is identified, which contributes to the development of resistance.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\uddec Why is it almost impossible to kill?<\/h2>\n\n<p>This bacterium is the king of adaptation:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>produces enzymes that destroy antibiotics;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>forms biofilms in which it becomes practically invulnerable;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>mutates faster than a new drug can appear;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201csteals\u201d resistance genes from other bacteria.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>And worst of all, it survives on dry surfaces for weeks. It is difficult to remove even in the sterile conditions of a hospital.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udee1 How is it being fought today?<\/h2>\n\n<p>\ud83d\udd39 Combinations of antibiotics &#8211; for example, colistin + meropenem, but effectiveness decreases.<\/p>\n\n<p>\ud83d\udd39 Phage therapy is the use of bacteriophages, but it is difficult, expensive, and unpredictable.<\/p>\n\n<p>\ud83d\udd39 Antiseptics and isolation only work as a preventive measure.<\/p>\n\n<p>\ud83d\udd39 New molecules are a key direction.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\udde6 Ukrainian development: attack on the \u201cIraqi horror\u201d<\/h2>\n\n<p>Scientists from the Avelife Institute of Nanotechnology and Organic Products, together with the Mechnikov Institute of Microbiology, have developed new heterocyclic compounds that demonstrate impressive results against A. baumannii.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udca5 Key results:<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The compound N-azepan-2-ylidene-N1-phenylhydrazine hydrochloride was found to be more effective than amikacin, azithromycin, ceftriaxone, and cefepime;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some molecules act at MICs (minimum inhibitory concentrations) 4\u20138 times better than reference antibiotics;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The anti-biofilm effect, i.e. the ability to destroy bacterial colonies in the form of biofilms, has been confirmed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\uddea How is this researched?<\/h2>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Synthesis and analysis of over 200 new molecules (imidazoles, triazoles, azepines).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Screening at CO-ADD (Australia) and in Ukrainian laboratories.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tests on resistant strains from hospitals \u2014 real clinical isolates from the military<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Time-to-kill study \u2014 an analysis of how quickly a compound kills a bacterium.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In vivo models \u2014 testing on living organisms.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udfe5 What&#8217;s next?<\/h2>\n\n<p>\ud83d\udd39 Patents have already been filed, including at the international level;<\/p>\n\n<p>\ud83d\udd39 Negotiations are underway with Ukrainian manufacturers (Yuria-Pharm, Farmak);<\/p>\n\n<p>\ud83d\udd39 Preclinical testing and subsequent transition to the clinical phase are planned.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2705 Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n<p><strong>Acinetobacter baumannii<\/strong> is not just a bacterium. It is a challenge for medicine, pharmaceuticals, and the country&#8217;s defense capabilities.
