Sapropel in soil restoration: opportunities, limitations and questions before application

Sapropel is a bottom sediment of freshwater bodies in which organic remains are combined with a mineral part. Because of this origin, it is often considered a source of organic matter and a possible soil improver. However, the word “sapropel” does not describe one standard product: the composition depends on the body of water, the sampling layer, the method of extraction, dehydration and storage.

Therefore, the question should not be “does sapropel work at all?” but “what material, on what soil, for what purpose, and under what controlled conditions can it be useful?” Below are the limits that should be clarified before application.

What can potentially change sapropel?

The organic part of the material can replenish the soil carbon pool, and the carbonate or clay fraction can affect acidity, element retention capacity and physical properties. But the direction and scale of changes are determined by the composition of a particular batch. For example, in a long-term experiment on sandy Haplic Luvisol in Lithuania, a single application of dry calcareous sapropel was studied for 18 years. The authors reported a decrease in acidity, an increase in exchangeable calcium and magnesium, organic carbon and total nitrogen; at the same time, mobile phosphorus increased and mobile potassium decreased. High experimental norms cannot be transferred to another field without calculation: this was a specific calcareous material, a specific soil and a multi-year crop rotation (Bakšienė & Janušienė, 2005).

Laboratory comparison of sapropel and soil samples before application

What field studies show—and what they don’t prove

A short field micro-plot experiment with tomatoes in Western Siberia provides an important counterexample to the advertising logic of “apply and get a harvest.” Untreated sapropel was applied once; both the control and experimental variants also received mineral fertilizers. Fruit yield did not change, and soil chemical parameters also showed no effect, although microbial nitrogen biomass and the share of this indicator in organic matter increased. The authors explicitly emphasized that the assessment requires consideration of soil, variety, and aftereffect (Naumova et al., 2017).

Another three-year experiment on sod-podzolic sandy loam soil in Latvia evaluated sapropel fertilizer in field crop rotation. In a publication on crop quality, the authors describe changes in individual crop indicators, but do not provide reasons to consider the material as a universal replacement for the nutrition system (Zarina, Cerina & Proskina, 2023). Together, these works show that the result may be manifested not only in yield and depends on the time, crop and background of fertilization.

The Environment Agency’s official guidance for materials applied to land requires that the material and the receiving soil be analysed separately. Parameters include dry matter and organic matter, pH, electrical conductivity, macro- and micronutrients, potentially toxic elements and, where appropriate, pathogens and organic contaminants. The guidance also warns against excessive nutrient application and changes in pH, which can affect the availability of metals (Environment Agency, 2026).

Safety: Analysis required before field test

Bottom sediment can accumulate substances that have entered the water body from the catchment. That is why the laboratory report should cover not only “useful” elements. For reference, EU Regulation 2019/1009 sets limit values for a number of contaminants for organic soil improvers, including cadmium, mercury, nickel, lead and inorganic arsenic. The belonging of a particular sapropel to the appropriate product category must be established legally, but the principle of impurity control itself is relevant (Regulation (EU) 2019/1009).

A minimum set of questions for the supplier or project

  • What body of water, area, and depth does the batch come from?
  • How was the representative sample selected and when was the analysis performed?
  • Which figures are given for dry matter, and which are given for actual wet mass?
  • Have heavy metals, arsenic, organic pollutants, pathogens, and physical impurities been tested in accordance with the risks of the water body?
  • What are the pH, conductivity, C:N ratio, and neutralizing capacity?
  • What is the agronomic goal: organic matter, acidity correction, structure, reclamation, or other?

How to move from hypothesis to safe implementation

It is worth starting not with a full field, but with diagnostics. Basic data on grain size distribution, pH, organic matter, elemental availability, and soil contamination are needed. After that, the results of the sapropel analysis are compared with the target indicators and limitations of a specific site.

The next step is a small-scale experiment with a control without sapropel and, if possible, with standard farming practices. The variants should differ only in the factor under study. It is advisable to evaluate not only yield, but also pH, electrical conductivity, available forms of elements, organic carbon, density or water resistance of aggregates, and for food crops – product safety indicators. The duration of observation should take into account possible aftereffects.

FAQ

Can sapropel replace fertilizers?

Not automatically. The content of available forms of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium varies, and in experiments sapropel was often evaluated against the background of mineral nutrition. A decision is possible only after analysis of the batch and balance calculation for the crop.

Is it suitable for acidic soils?

Calcareous sapropel may have a neutralizing effect, but organic or siliceous material will behave differently. Indicators of neutralizing capacity and buffering capacity of the soil are needed.

Why can’t there be a universal norm?

Due to different moisture content, composition, impurity concentration, soil type and purpose of use, even the same mass of raw material can contain very different amounts of dry matter.

Is a certificate from the supplier enough?

It is necessary to check whether the document describes the current batch, sampling method, laboratory, units of measurement and relevant risks of the water body. For a significant project, an independent control analysis is advisable.

What is the first practical step?

Formulate the measurable problem of the site, select representative soil and material samples, and then, together with an agronomist and laboratory, draw up a small-scale protocol.

Conclusion.

Sapropel can be a tool in a soil restoration program, but it is not a ready-made answer in itself. The best-informed approach is to characterize the origin and composition of the batch, match it to the needs and risks of the site, conduct a controlled field test, and only then scale up the solution.

If you are evaluating sapropel for a specific project, please prepare the results of the material and soil analysis and a list of target indicators. This will allow AVELife specialists to discuss an appropriate inspection plan without making any promises in advance.
